Our Health Care Mess Is a Symptom of a Much Bigger Problem

Our Health Care Mess Is a Symptom of a Much Bigger Problem

It’s gotten to the point where if we oppose the government doing anything, we are accused of being opposed to getting it done.

Just in case you’ve missed it, there has been a lot of debate recently about reforming our nation’s health care system. The president and his allies in Congress have told us they have just the ticket to fix our problems: a plan that creates a new federal government insurance company and pays for it by raising taxes on just about everyone and cutting nearly $500 billion from Medicare.
Their plan takes an unsustainable mountain of government debt, bureaucracy and spending, then bulldozes a new mountain of bureaucracy and debt right on top of it.

But for all of the mind-boggling complexity and numbers we’ve heard, this debate is about much more than health care. It’s about how we find ourselves in a situation where we are debating the best way to give the government control over another big part of our lives and our economy.

In the story of Hansel and Gretel, the children drop a trail of breadcrumbs as they walk through the forest, so they will be able to find their way home again. But when birds eat the breadcrumbs, the children find they are lost in the dark and frightening woods.

Well, lost in the woods is exactly where we find ourselves as a country right now. We know we’re in trouble, but there’s no clearly marked path to get us back to where we were, and it’s plenty frightening.

In the past year alone, government has taken over two automakers, insurance companies and hundreds of banks. It has bailed out Wall Street and attempted to stimulate the economy by taking a trillion dollars out of the private sector and spending it on wasteful government programs. It has thrown taxpayer money at people to encourage them to buy new cars and houses, and it is looking at imposing massive new job-killing taxes on businesses in the name of reducing “global warming.”

All of these things have happened because we’ve stopped asking, “Should government attempt to solve this problem?” Instead, we start by asking, “How should government fix the problem?” It’s now considered a sign of admirable restraint to occasionally ask, “How much should we spend?” And somehow we started thinking that anything less than a trillion dollars is a bargain.

This matters not just because of our unsustainable debt and the huge amounts of money we waste. It matters because every time we give a job to the government, we take away some control that people have over their lives, and we take away a little bit more of their freedom. In return for letting government try its hand at solving a problem, we as citizens cede our ability to try for ourselves to find a better way.

It’s awkward to admit it, but my colleagues in Congress have led this country into the woods despite our oath of office. We swore to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States and to bear true faith and allegiance to it. The Constitution prescribes a very limited role for the federal government. There is not a word in our oath, or in the Constitution, about most of what we do. As we’ve wandered off the path of liberty, there are few crumbs left of the Constitution in the halls of Congress to lead us out of the woods.

There’s not a word in the Constitution about the government deciding what medical tests private health insurers should pay for. Nothing about the government deciding how much executives on Wall Street should earn, or what kind of light bulbs and cars we should buy. There’s nothing about the thousands of parochial earmarks that fund local bridges to nowhere, golf courses, bike paths, sewer plants, and tea pot museums.

There’s nothing about these or many other things in the Constitution because they have nothing to do with the proper role of a federal government in a free society. But these are exactly the kinds of things our government spends its time and money on, and we don’t even question anymore why that is.

Instead, it’s gotten to the point where if we oppose the government doing anything, we are accused of being opposed to getting it done. That’s patently absurd. If you really want to get something done, and done the right way, the government is the absolute last place we should turn.
The tea parties, town halls and rallies affirm the American people are rethinking the appropriate role of the government in a free society. Hopefully, their discontent will be demonstrated in the 2010 elections. Only the American people can hold our elected federal representatives accountable for fulfilling their oath of office.

In the health care debate, this means deciding exactly what role the government should play to help people and the private sector find solutions, instead of creating a monstrous new bureaucracy that puts the government in charge of every decision. But this debate is about much more than health care. It is a battle for the heart and soul of America. It is a struggle between freedom and socialism, between free markets and a centrally planned economy, and between “We the People” and an entrenched class of elite politicians.

The current debate over health care reform is a symptom of a bigger problem in Washington. But it can be the catalyst for a wider debate about the proper role of government in our lives. The same debate can lead us to a moment when Americans finally take a stand to return government to its proper place -- and we all start to find our way out of the woods.

Read the Bill: Senate Version of ObamaCare Now Online

Posted by Jim's Staff 11/19/2009 - 10:52:29 AM

Late Wednesday night, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) released his own version of a health care bill that if passed will raise taxes, increase premiums, cut Medicare and lead to health care rationing. It's imperative that freedom-loving Americans everywhere raise their voices in opposition to this bill. It truly represents a government takeover of health care.

To be better informed for the battle ahead, read the entire bill (or at least skim over its 2,074 pages) here.

DeMint: Americans Won’t Be Fooled by Democrat Shell Game, a Vote to Proceed is a Vote for a Government Takeover of Health Care

November 17, 2009 - WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina), chairman of the Senate Steering Committee, made the following statement:

“Let’s be clear: Any senator who votes to proceed to this bill is voting for a government takeover of health care. Senators who hide behind procedure and claim they just want to allow for debate are not being honest, they are trying to deceive their voters while helping to pass this terrible bill that will make health care more expensive.

“Earlier today, Democrat leaders told reporters that the Senate may vote to proceed to a shell bill, not related to health care reform, in an effort to grant the President’s wish for a government takeover of our nation’s health care by Christmas. These outrageous shell games won’t fool Americans. Voters will remember who stands up for their freedom and who stands with the special interests who want to ram through this takeover.”

“President Obama and Democrats have now put forward at least four different versions of their government takeover, and Harry Reid has been secretly working behind closed doors on the fifth act of this fiasco. But despite the nuances, every Democrat bill puts Washington in control of health care, slashes Medicare coverage for seniors, raises premiums for families, raises taxes, places bureaucrats between patients and doctors, punishes young adults who choose not to buy coverage, and opens the door to government rationing of care.

“Americans have loudly and repeatedly rejected the President’s government takeover of health care. It’s time to for the Senate to listen, stop the shell games, and start over with real solutions that will provide every American the opportunity to afford, own and keep a health care plan that best meets their needs.”

GOP Executive Committee Meeting - Charleston County SC

Goose Creek 9/12ers,

I am passing this along to anyone who is interested. There is an executive committee meeting of the GOP for Charleston County. Even if you don't live in Charleston County feel free to attend as they will be discussing issues that affect all of us. I have left the overview for the meeting in the text below along with the address.

Tristan

I just met with some folks today to let me know that at next Monday's GOP meeting, Gresham Barrett is speaking (we may want to let him know what we think about his TARP vote) AND there will be a vote on joining Greenville GOP in censuring Lindsay Graham.

This is an opportunity to let the parties know that we're serious and that we're motivated...that the some old this won't fly anymore. We need a HUGE turnout! Even if only half our members show up, the numbers will shock people. Now is one of those times that we need to leave our comfort zones to send a message. It's not a trip to Washington, but for local politics, it's just as important!

Please make every effort to attend. Remember, it's not good enough to just attend a meeting or two, we have to get involved!

Financial Services Committee - Democrats Vote To Give ACORN Regulatory Authority Over Financial Institutions

I'd like to add a local note to the story posted below submitted by our local Legislative watchdog Darleen:

The house financial committee voted to give ACORN a REGULATORY ROLE OVER FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS. There were 3 not voting and Gresham Barrett of S.C. was one of them. Call Gresham Barrett @202-225-5301 Wash. office. and ask why he did not vote. We must also call our House Representative and let them know that under NO circumstances we can accept this being put in this bill.

Thanks and let's get them phones buzzing.

Sarah Palin "Going Rogue"

Sarah Palin's book "Going Rogue" was No. 1 on Amazon.com just two days after Harper announced the release date which was moved up from next spring to this November 17th.

Going Rogue is a 432-page memoir, still number one as of this posting and booksellers are fighting for sales. Amazon.com is offering Sarah's book for 15.65, a 45% discount.

Going Rogue has been given a first printing by Harper of 1.5 million copies and I expect a second printing will be needed before Christmas.

From Jim DeMint: Eleven things you should know about the Baucus bill

On Tuesday, Sen. Max Baucus, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, released his long-awaited health care proposal which will be considered by the full committee next week. The plan contains more of the same big government policies that have been proposed by this Congress and the Obama Administration for months. It does nothing to increase Americans’ access to affordable health care coverage. In fact, the Baucus plan includes several devastating provisions that hurt the ability of millions of Americans to keep the coverage they currently have (and like).

Moreover, the combination of tax increases, penalties, new government health care programs, increased fees on private health care entities, and destruction of current health care coverage products will force this nation into the grip of a government-run health care system.

Click Here to read about the 11 things you should know about Baucus' proposal.

Operation: Can You Hear Us Now?

March on the Media - October 17th 2009

Obviously, the "main stream" media are hard of hearing and seeing. About 2 million mad-as-hell taxpayers assembling in Washington, D.C. for the largest-ever (most well-behaved ever, most respectful ever) protest did not make it onto their radar screens (or our TV screens).

They need our help. Maybe we cannot repeat an assembly of 2 million mad-as-hell taxpaying patriots in one place, but surely those who longed to go and couldn't would love to be a part of Operation "Can You Hear Us Now?" I'll bet for every one patriot who went to D.C. there are 10-20 more who wished they could have been there as well.

Well my friends, HAVE I GOT A PLAN FOR YOU...

It's called, "Operation: Can You Hear Us Now?" Here's how it might work, but feel free to improvise!

Step 1: Contact all your freedom-loving, American-loving, free-speech loving friends and get together to plan. Draw from your local Tea Party group or 9/12 group or other friends. Protest all things you did in D.C. - plus the complicit media!

Step 2: Identify local left-wing media outlets (most likely TV, since no one reads newspapers anymore).

Step 3: Plan a tea-party rally for October 17th, 2009. If you have enough folks, visit multiple sites concurrently, otherwise pick your least favorite, liberally biased outlet as ground zero. Time it for max participation for the working (i.e. tax-paying) class. Before the AM news or at the evening 6 o'clock hour might be good (local time).

Step 4: Use your 1st Amendment Right to Free Speech right outside their offices or broadcast locations. Make sure you are on public property, not private property. Bring your signs, banners, flags, and voices to the event. Protest big government, small minds in Congress, and liberal media atrocities in reporting (or non-reporting). (Watch for the Free Speech media to attempt to have you forcibly removed by law enforcement - so stay on public property!)

Step 5: Be peaceful, respectful, but let them HEAR you and SEE you. Remember, they are hard of hearing and their eyesight isn't what it used to be the last 8 years prior. They accidentally missed 2 million people protesting in D.C. in one of the biggest protests in US History. Bring your video to upload clips to the internet later.

Step 6: Complete your tea party with a cup o' tea before leaving the premises. Go home (remember to leave no litter behind - we're not liberals).

Step 7: Turn on the TV and see if they saw you. If not, smile and remember that November 2010 is just several more Tea parties away!

Thanks to some American heros (R.L., G.B., A.B.) for the idea. We can take it from here;)

Statewide Gathering Success!

Saturday, August 29 - We had a good turnout at the park Saturday. Along with the Lexington 9/12ers, folks from Greenville, Spartanburg, Summerville, Pelion, Gilbert, the Northeast and Mount Pleasant joined us.

On the local political front, two folks from Nikki Haley's campaign for Governor stopped by as well as candidate for Senate Christina Jeffrey. Christina is running for the 2010 Race for SC 4th Congressional District. She could end up being a very viable candidate for Inglis’ seat. She has a couple websites, I found this one to have a lot of helpful information on it for those folks in her district to read.

Our friend and fellow Lexington 9/12er from ABATE attended and reminded us of the importance that like minded groups continue to meet with each other as it will take all of us, regardless of what group we belong to in order to make effective change.

We enjoyed friendship and food on the grill, great desserts and want to thank everyone who cooked, donated food and supplies. A good time was had by all.

On to D.C.!

It’s come to this: Clyburn compares town hall protesters to thugs who attacked civil rights marchers

The number three Democrat in the House, behind only Pelosi and Hoyer, and a longtime practitioner of toxic race-bating on behalf of his party. Unbelievable.
“I have seen this kind of hate before. I have seen this discussion before,” he said. “I have seen snarling dogs going after people who were trying to peacefully assemble. I have seen the eyes of people who were being spat upon.”
“This is all about activity trying to deny the establishment of a civil right. And I do believe that health care for all is — a civil right,” the House Majority Whip argued. “And I think that is why you see this kind of activity. This is an attempt on the part of some to deny the establishment of a civil right.”
Clyburn, a veteran of the civil rights movement, said he was particularly appalled by the use of the Swastika symbol at some of these town hall events. Noting that one had been painted on the office of Rep. David Scott (D-Ga.), an African-American, Clyburn insisted that was proof enough that some of the protests were racially motivated.
“There is no question in my mind,” he said.
This is a guy who’s so intimidated by the supposed terror tactics he’s witnessing that he’s actually been known to doze off at town halls of his own.

Letter to the Whitehouse by Idaho 9-12er

To the Whitehouse and President Barack Hussein Obama,

Re: August 4, 2009 Whitehouse Statement assaulting free speech and dissent.

Your statement on the Whitehouse web site today, August 4th, 2009 (fifth paragraph), is a direct affront to every American. It is a vile assault on the God-given right of every free American to speak his mind and to petition his government for redress. It is an abomination in the sight of God from which all life and freedom comes.

To quote you directly:

"There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to end of life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain emails or through casual conversation. Since we can’t keep track of all of them here at the White House, we’re asking for your help. If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov"

By this statement, you stand in direct and incontrovertible violation of your oath of office. This call for informants to report upon those who disagree with your plans is reminiscent of the police state tactics employed by some of the worst tyrannies the world has seen. It is reminiscent of the tyrannies that my father and those before him fought to destroy.

Therefore, I demand that this statement be retracted and further demand that you stand up and honor the oath you took upon entering Government service. Here it is again as a reminder:

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; That I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion pledging my life, my fortune, and my sacred honor. So help me God. "

This is the oath that you swore upon taking office. This is the oath that my father before me swore and that I have sworn as well. That oath stands in stark contrast to the sickening statement on the Whitehouse page. You cannot have it both ways. Either you will retract that statement and apologize to all Americans, or you will reveal yourself and those behind you as oath breakers, breaking faith with the Constitution to which you swore to defend and bear true faith and allegiance. Your continued failure to honor your oath of office will only confirm what so many of us already know: that you and those who support you are in fact America’s domestic enemies.

I hereby serve notice to you that I, Ward Dorrity, stand in total opposition to you and your agenda; that the values I hold and the principles that guide me are in direct opposition to the destruction of our once great republican democracy. Murder of the unborn, treason and socialism are NOT family values. They are not MY values. They are crimes against God, Man, nature, justice and reason.

The Health Care reform plan is simply another one of those crimes. The Democratic House Plan is a monstrosity that will seriously erode overall health care in this nation; it will crush free enterprise in the health care industry, and thereby contribute to your destruction of the free market. I categorically reject any government plan - especially Cap and Trade - that threatens the American economy with destruction.

I am not afraid to stand up to this assault on our fundamental and God-given liberties. I will express these sentiments to all who will listen, and I will resist by every art, with every means and with all the skill that I possess those who would attempt to silence me.

It is my right by birth and by heritage; and by virtue of my citizenship in these United States.

It is my duty by virtue of the sacrifice of my father and all of those who have given their lives for love of God and country and liberty

I proudly announce my dissent, and stand forth as one who is speaking out against these plans to all I know and can reach, and as one who intends to continue to speak out against them irrespective of your wholly Un-American pronouncements to the contrary, so help me God.

I call on all loyal, faithful, patriotic, and God fearing Americans to stand against not only these bills, but against this new, dangerous tack taken by this administration. .

Sincerely,

Ward Dorrity

Frazier seeking Lexington House seat - Danny Frazier wants a new political title. The Lexington Town Councilman is running for state representative in the Republican primary in House District 69.

The district sprawls across a mix of established and new neighborhoods in West Columbia, Oak Grove, St. Andrews, the town of Lexington and the south-eastern shore of Lake Murray.
“It’s time state government stop the bickering and state working together to bring about economic development and jobs,” Frazier said in letter sent to voters.

Frazier, a builder, has been a town councilman for four years. Incumbent Ted Pitts is running for lieutenant governor.

Sen. David Thomas, R-Greenville is running for Congress, challenging Republican U.S. Rep. Bob Inglis for the 4th Congressional District seat.
